Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf

The Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is a turf race for two year olds. The distance is one mile and the purse is million. The Juvenile Turf was first run in 2007 at the Breeders' Cup at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. Due to technical requirements as an expansion race for the Breeders' Cup, the race is not eligible as a graded stakes race for its first two runnings. The second running will be held in October 2008 at Santa Anita.

The 2007 winner of the Juvenile Turf was Nownownow, by Whywhywhy and out of Where and Now. Whywhywhy is a descendent of the famed racehorse sire Mr. Prospector. This bay colt was trained by Francois Parisel after the colt's first trainer, Patrick Biancone, was suspended by racing authorities for medication violations.

Although the colt did not get his first win until his fourth start, he became a competitor in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and, although he was considered a long shot by bettors, he made a powerful run down a soggy turf course on a rainy day to capture the million dollar purse. The win gave jockey Julien Leparoux his first Breeders' Cup win, as well as the colt's second win in six starts.

For the 2008 season, the colt was sent to Ireland to race on the grass under trainer David Wachman. The colt debuted at Ireland's famous Curragh Racecourse for the one mile Group One Irish 2,000 Guineas, but finished fifth in a five horse field.

In order to make it to the Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, the two year old colts must participate in several qualifying races. These begin in late September and run through early October and include the Royal Lodge Stakes at Ascot, the Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont, the Summer Stakes at Woodbine and the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland. These are all competitive tracks that feature competitive fields, which helps to ensure that the colts who are invited into the elite field of fourteen at the Breeders' Cup world championships are truly horses of championship abilities.

The grey Goose Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf is a weight for age race, which is reserved for higher class races. These races typically have higher purse amounts as well and require the horses to be of the same age, class and gender. When the Juvenile Turf becomes eligible for grade stakes status in 2009, the race will become a Grade I stakes.
