The Different Chihuahua Breeds

Chihuahuas haven't always been as popular as they are today, but after being shown in movies, television shows, and commercials, they are now one of the most wanted dogs in the U.S. People seem to choose them over other dog breeds because they are small, loving, and of course, cute. However, many people are misinformed about the different Chihuahua breeds.

Chihuahuas are the smallest dog breed in the world, and unfortunately many breeders try to capitalize off this by calling their puppies different names such as teacup, miniature, toy, etc. This leads potential buyers to think they are purchasing a registered teacup Chihuahua when in fact they are purchasing nothing more than an underweight Chihuahua. The fact is that there are only two Chihuahua breeds recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club). They are the long-haired and short-haired Chihuahua. If a breeder claims to have a different breed of puppies registered, you shouldn't buy them. When these breeders breed them to be so small just so they can make more money off of them, the Chihuahuas become frail and unhealthy, often having their organs simply shutting down on them.

The Long-haired Chihuahua - While there isn't a whole lot of differences between the two breeds, the long-haired Chihuahua has a much different coat. Their coat is long, thin, and very soft to the touch. If you are thinking about owning one but you are concerned about them shedding on your furniture, don't worry. This breed actually sheds much less than the short-haired Chihuahua. Their coat also takes much longer to grow to it's full length, often growing for several years. The Short-haired Chihuahua - As the name might suggest, this Chihuahua breed has much shorter hair. If you plan on owning one, it's a good idea to get a grooming comb to brush out all of their loose hairs. Short-haired Chihuahuas, even though they have less hair, will shed much more than the long-haired ones.

These are the only two registered Chihuahua breeds. Remember to avoid breeders who are trying to rip you off by selling you otherwise. Let's keep our loved Chihuahuas healthy!
