Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic

The Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic is a 1 1/8 miles dirt race for fillies and mares, three years old and up. The race was inaugurated in 2007 and features a purse of million. The race was originally known as the Breeders' Cup Distaff, which was inaugurated in 1984. The Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic is slotted to be the last race of the first day of the two day Breeders' Cup two day event. The race has been held at two distances with the distance being 1 ¼ miles from 1984 to 1987 before being changed to 1 1/8 miles in 1988. The race is a weight for age Grade I stakes race.

Because the race is for fillies and mares three years old and older, it does open up the possibility that more than one horse has the ability to compete numerous times in this race. One such horse was Bayakoa, who won the race in 1989 and 1990. The mare was ridden by Laffit Pincay, Jr. in both races and trained by Ron McAnally.

Several of the world's most popular jockeys and trainers have competed in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic as well. Pat Day and Mike E. Smith both have three wins in the race, with Day winning in 1986, 1991 and 2001. Smith won in 1995, 1997 and 2002. D. Wayne Lukas has four wins in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic with Life's Magic (1985), Lady's Secret (1986), Sacahuista (1987), and Spain in 2000. Three of his four wins were consecutive wins from 1985 to 1987. Owner Allen E. Paulson has also had great success in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic with three wins with horses Ajina (1997), Escena (1998) and Azeri (2002).

There will be fourteen mares and fillies competing for the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic in 2008. The race will be held as part of the two day Breeders' Cup event in October at Santa Anita. The road to the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic is a long way requiring mares to compete in several qualifying races including the Ruffian Handicap (Grade I), Gazelle Stakes (Grade I), Fitz Dixon Cotillion Stakes (Grade II), British Columbia Oaks (Grade III) and Beldame (Grade I).

Several of the mares competing this year come from varied backgrounds, but all have at least a million in earnings this year and six starts at tracks such as Keeneland, Belmont, Gulfstream Park, Belmont Park, Saratoga and Churchill Downs.
